GU Q&A - Oliver Knight and Hugo Jones

What does it mean to you to be recording for the Global Underground label?

Oliver: It’s an absolute honour, to be affiliated to one of the biggest record labels in electronic music! We hope it will be the start of something very exciting!

Hugo: GU has a host of names on the roster in which we have both grown up admiring. It’s a dream come true!

What is your earliest/favourite GU related memory?

Hugo: Danny Tenaglia has been a big influence for both of us growing up so I think my favourite GU memory would be the London compilation. Also, with being from London it was even more special and a very influential album for me.

Oliver: I second that! The Deep Dish Moscow compilation is also an incredible album along with the earlier Danny Tenaglia Athens album. Great memories!

What kind of sound do you hope to bring to the label?

Oliver: Big bass lines and some seriously groovy tech house sounds!

Hugo: We hope to bring a sound that is current, fresh and most importantly, a sound that people want to hear. We draw influences from many different styles of music and we hope our sound will be one that people enjoy and can dance to.

Tell us a little about how this single/remix cam about – inspiration, where it was made, what you wanted to achieve with the vibe etc.

Oliver: It came about during a visit to the white isle earlier in the year. We had an idea in our heads on how we wanted the track to sound and that it would be groovy with that huge bass line. After spending a day in the studio everything sounded great but the track was lacking something, that’s when we discovered the amazing vocal, which opened the track up a lot more.

Hugo: When we both discovered the news from GU that Kaiserdisco would be doing the remix, we literally jumped off our seats and gave each other a massive high five. We knew that they would create something awesome.

Where is your head at musically at the moment?

Hugo: At the moment we are really focussing on production and creating great music. We have influences across many different genres of music and try to emulate these inspirations into our own style of house.

Oliver: House music is constantly evolving and you have to evolve with it if you want to succeed. We don’t want to be pigeon holed into certain genres so we try to create a sound that is accessible throughout

How do you stay on top of all things digital, from downloads to DJ equipment? Do you enjoy how quickly it is constantly changing?!

Hugo: We tend to spend a day every week comparing tracks that we have found that stand out, Weather it would be promo’s from record labels or tracks we have found whilst shopping online.

Oliver: On occasions we use Serato, or depending on the equipment available at certain venues, its nice to turn up just carrying USB sticks. Saves carrying that heavy bag around and less to check in whilst travelling

Where in the world can we hear you play in the coming weeks?

Oliver: There’s a few exciting locations that are in discussions at the moment including India, Australia and the Middle East which we really hope will happen. To be able to travel around the globe doing the job we love is something we never imagined whilst growing up. We feel very lucky

Hugo: You can always catch us playing in Mallorca throughout the summer months, and during the winter we will also be playing all around the UK with gigs all over the place coming up soon.

Which date are you particularly looking forward to any why?

Hugo: We are really looking forward to a festival coming up in Andorra early next year, organised by an old friend of ours. We’ve never played a festival on the slopes before so we are pretty excited about it!

What other plans do you have for the summer?

Oliver: Well after a very busy summer in Mallorca and also around Europe we are now concentrating on production and have quite a busy release schedule in the up and coming months so watch this space!

Hugo: Its been a brilliant summer and now we are really excited with new projects in the pipeline and looking forward to the release of Navaja and hopefully many more in the future!
